13th WEEK OF PREGNANCY

This week’s an new week for you to make a move on a new beginning. Your baby is now 3 inches long and approximately about .8 ounce in weight. He continues to grow and grow faster each day. Though your baby is bigger now than the previous weeks, we still consider him as a little egg. His head is still bigger than the body (the largest part now) but your baby’s extremities are now fully formed. This time, your tiny egg baby starts to produce insulin from the pancreas to help both of you regulate his blood sugar level as he continues to build up, nurture and grow. His eyes start to move closer, making his face look normal now.

This week is believed as the highlight of your baby. Why? Because he’s not an embryo anymore; he’s now called as “fetus.” Even though you can’t feel that he’s dancing and kicking, he really does it now. He’s even thumb sucking at this very moment. Fingertips are formed on his little tiny fingertips, organs and veins are obviously evident through his transparent skin. Lanugo is a fine, and soft hair that covers your baby’s sensitive skin. The amniotic fluid that has been swallowed can be excreted at this time because his urinary tract and kidneys are now functional.

Since this week is the last period of your first trimester, the risk for miscarriage decreases as long as you take care of yourself and the baby inside you. You passed the stage of stress, fatigue and morning sickness that I know really bothers you most. And by the end of this week, you’ll be more comfortable and at ease because you already catch up with your pregnancy. Shortness of breath is one common symptom of pregnancy but don't worry, its just natural. Mind you, food cravings now start to make you gain some weight, and you can’t help it. It’s just a compensation that replaces you’re nausea to hunger. There’s a tendency that at this time, your breasts are producing an essential and nutritious fluid that makes your baby immune to some organisms; this is Colostrum. It is a fluid that should be feed to the baby after birth. Since your uterus keeps on expanding, it’s a probability that you’ll have trouble with flatulence and indigestion. Chances are you can’t even wear your favorite jeans for it won’t fit you by now.
