17th week of pregnancy

You’re baby is really stepping up! This week, you might no notice it but your baby-to-be is gaining more weight  and length. He’s about 5.35 inch and about 5 ounces this week. He’s getting bigger, cuter... and yes, he’s getting smarter. His umbilical cord is getting thicker, gaining length, and more stronger for the next 23 weeks to come. Since his ears are really into it’s final position, and fully formed, your baby is starting to hear things. His complex brain is slowly developing to process his other senses like smell, taste, touch, and sight.

Gaining more of that bump means your gaining more weight as well. Keep in mind some advices you need to keep your pregnancy on a smooth healthy track. Your doctor will constantly check your sugar level by dipping a strip of paper on your urine. These blood sugar tests will be essential for you and your baby-to-be. Nearly two percent of all pregnant women suffer from gestational diabetes that might cause harm for you and your young one. And if ever you have gestational diabetes, do not worry. This can be controlled by a special diet and medication, so you can have normal pregnancy, and healthy baby.

Your body is still undergoing changes inside to accommodate your baby. As your bump gets bigger, your abdomen and breast may feel itchy sometimes. Your baby bump will start to change your posture making your back ache for some time. Your pregnancy hormones might play a bit with your emotions as continuous mood swings will come every now and then. Still expect some indigestion, flatulence, and heartburn because your stomach is still adjusting. Don’t forget to have your regular medications prescribed by your doctor.

Many changes will undergo as the week passes by, some of the changes might seem comforting, like the rounded belly your always showing off, your full breast might be more comforting for you as well. But some of this signs or changes might seem disturbing, but keep in mind that these changes will only last until your baby arrives. Bleeding gums is caused by your blood increasing in volume to provide your baby sufficient nutrients. As your belly stretches dramatically, you might have some stretch marks, and there is no vitamins, or creams that are going to stop them from coming, but most women say that stretch marks fade over time after the birth of your baby. Dark line or “linea nigra” might be noticeable, a dark line that extends from your belly button to your vaginal area, but worry not as this lines will disappear after giving birth. During pregnancy you might notice color spots on your face, these are called the mask of pregnancy or chloasma, a skin pigmentation that fades away after the baby’s birth. You might be in some sort of dilemma while facing more changes occurring in your body, but do not distress yourself as this changes is only temporary and you will have no choice but to endure this until your baby is born. Just stay relaxed and happy for you and your precious little one.
